How Friendly Fridays help living with memory loss

September is  World Alzheimer’s Month and the theme is “Remember Me” so we are looking at a group that helps people living with dementia or Alzheimers.

Living with memory loss is challenging not just for the person with memory loss but also for their carers, family and friends as everyone experiences memory loss and dementia in a unique way. Being able to attend group sessions can provide opportunities to learn about living well with memory loss. It also provides the opportunity to meet and socialise with others in a similar situation.

At Neighbourhood Action in Farnley, New Farnley & Moor Top they host what they call “Friendly Friday” – a weekly memory loss group.

Nikki Pattinson, Memory Loss Worker at Neighbourhood Action tells us more about the group and what they get up to.

Tell us more about Friendly Friday

Thanks to the support of seven dedicated volunteers the group has been running for six years and is going from strength to strength.

We offer a safe space for people living with memory loss to come together to access friendship, support and fun. There are up to 15 members at a time and we have both men and women from their early 70s to late 80s (at the moment). Carers are welcome to attend and two do currently.

Why is the group called Friendly Friday?

The members chose to call our weekly memory loss group Friendly Friday as there is always lots of laughter as we try our hand at new things, sometimes with better results than others!

We have lunch followed by an activity. Recently we’ve enjoyed learning to play adapted ukuleles, making Easter baskets and finding out more about the history of the Romans in Leeds. No two weeks are the same.”

As one group member says I really love coming here and enjoy the different activities.’

People who are interested in the group need to refer themselves/be referred to Neighbourhood Action. We will then visit and discuss the suitability of the group and all of our other activities.”

Thanks Nikki.
