In 2011, after consultation with more than 350 service users, Adult Social Care responded to feedback that services for the deaf and hard of hearing citizens of Leeds had been underused and modernisation was required to encourage more people to engage with the opportunities on offer. The outcome? The establishment of the Deaf Across Leeds Enablement Service (DALES) – providing support for over 2000 deaf or hard of hearing people in Leeds.
In line with the Better Lives for People in Leeds initiative, Leeds City Council funds DALES. DALES supports people with diagnosed hearing loss and offers a personalised way of supporting people in their local communities, offering a wide range of activities to attract people from different age ranges and cultural backgrounds.
In their new offices on East Parade Street, there’s one thing you can guarantee of getting from the DALES staff – a really warm welcome. The friendly team are also highly skilled in various methods of communication, including British Sign Language and have the experience and skills to enable them to enable those that need their support to live as independently and safely as possible.
What services and support can DALES provide?
If you’re deaf or hard of hearing or know of someone who is, please ask yourself the questions below. If you answer no to any of them, DALES is there to help.
- Do you always hear callers at your home?
- Can you hear your smoke alarm?
- Can you hear your telephone and/or television?
If the answer is no to any or all of the above, a DALES Technical Officer can carry out a quick assessment of your needs and help provide you with the necessary equipment to make your life just that little bit easier. Simply drop into their office (details below) on Tuesday and Thursday 9.30am – 12.30pm and 1.30 – 3.30pm or, if you have difficulty getting to the office, they can visit you in your home.
It’s not just about equipping you with gadgets to make daily living better for you though – there’s far more to DALES than advising what equipment is available and how it works! The Specialist Enablement Assessors are an experienced team who can support you with housing issues, accessing employment services or accessing benefit services. They’ll advise you what’s available for you, what to do, who to go to and which department you need to contact and they’ll even help you book a fully qualified British Sign Language Interpreter to accompany you if you needed.
Finally, if you need support from a Social Worker to assist with a Telecare referral or a Carers Assessment, you can contact their Single Point of Access (SPA) worker either directly or via a relative, GP or a third sector organisation. A DALES team member will then arrange a person centred assessment for you to identify your needs.
